Pillows make the most visual impact on your bed. You need more than your standard sleeping pillows though; there are three types of pillows you will want to incorporate.
Start with your sleeping pillows first – place these up against your headboard. I like to hide these behind the others for a number of reasons, but the main reason is that these are floppy pillows that don’t maintain their form so they tend to look sloppy. Plus at any given time my husband may have drooled or sweat all over his pillow… just being a realist!
Next, you’ll place decorative Euro pillows in front of your sleeping pillows. Euro pillows are a 26″ square. A Queen sized bed will fit two, and a King sized bed will fit three. These provide an extra visual layer of comfort. I always recommend you use feather pillow inserts because they can always be fluffed and in my experience never permanently flatten.

Last you’ll fill in the space between the Euro pillows. For a Queen sized bed, I’d recommend one to three throw pillows. The throw pillows in front of your Euro pillows should be smaller than 26″ so each layer is visible. You could either center one between the Euros or put two in front of the Euros and then center another one in front of those. Below is an example of every layer working together.
Sheets are what you actually lay on so they should be comfortable, right? I like to find a balance between quality and affordability. It blows my mind how expensive most sheets are, especially because they don’t last a really long time in my house. Even if I wash my sheets weekly, eventually they always discolor where we lay. For this reason, I like to stay in the range of fifty to sixty dollars for King-sized. sheets. That way I don’t feel as bad replacing them more often than anything else on my bed. I have tried even lower price point sheets, but those usually pill quickly and don’t feel great on my skin.
Now it drives me insane if the sheets don’t appear tailored so when I’m making the bed I will first lay out the top sheet evenly and then tuck each side under the mattress. I’ll then fold the corner of the top sheet over to the side and tuck it under the mattress as pictured below. Voila.

Duvet & Cover
Every great bed needs a soft, pillow-like duvet. If you have a comforter, it’s time to ditch it for a quality white duvet which as an added bonus you can continue to change the look of with duvet covers.
If you are thinking to yourself… “the duvet never stays where it’s supposed to and it drives me insane!” I have been in your shoes before. I previously owned duvets and duvet covers from Bed Bath & Beyond and Crate & Barrel, and I have always had the same issue. I almost switched back to a comforter for this reason, but then I found out that Pottery Barn makes their duvets with little fabric hooks. Their duvet covers also have fabric ties which means you can tie the duvet at the cover corners and it will never move again. I am sure there are other companies out there making them like this so definitely make sure you look for this feature when purchasing your next one.

Adding a throw over your bed creates an extra layer of coziness. It also allows you an opportunity to give your bedding a quick, cheap refresh throughout the year giving your bedroom a whole new look. Over the winter, I had a faux fur throw which I just switched out this spring for a lightweight, striped throw. I also rotate in this houndstooth throw as well.
