Frequently Asked Questions about Portable Bassinets
Are portable bassinets safe?
The short answer is yes! Portable bassinets are an approved sleep surface according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Any baby product classified as a “bassinet” has to meet strict safety standards set by the ASTM – you can read through all of them HERE on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website.
Here’s the official policy statement from the AAP…
AAP recommends all babies sleep on their back, on a flat, firm, separate sleep surface such as a bassinet, play yard or crib, and to keep the baby’s sleep space free of blankets, bumpers, toys or other objects.
Rest assured, all types of bassinets are safe for your baby to sleep in.
How long can you use a portable bassinet?
The recommended usage varies for each bassinet type – check the manufacturer’s product label when researching the best one to purchase for your family.
The AAP guidelines are for babies to sleep with his/her parents until 6 months of age. However, many babies outgrow the weight limits of their bassinet before then.
The average weight limit for portable bassinets is 15 lbs which typically is when baby is around 4 months of age. Many babies reach 15 lbs much sooner and some aren’t 15 lbs until 6 months of age.
There are portable bassinets with weight limits of up to 25 lbs, so if you want to lengthen your usage time then look for one with a high weight limit.
After that, you’ll want to move baby into a full-size crib, equipped with a firm, breathable mattress.
Are bassinets worth it?
If you don’t need portability, then honestly a pack and play next to your bed would work for a safe sleeping surface for baby in your bedroom.
However, many parents want to be able to move baby from room to room without waking them. That’s where a portable bassinet would really come in handy!
They also make great newborn loungers for on-the-go moms to use on play dates, overnights, and throughout the day while getting things done around the house.
Choose a portable bassinet within your budget and we think you’ll find great value in it. Plus, you can always re-sell it on Facebook Marketplace when you’re finished using it to recoup some of the cost.
