As an expectant mother, it’s hard to know what products you will or won’t need for your newborn baby. There’s a ton of information online but it’s still hard to narrow down exactly what you should spend your money on. During the first year of your child’s life, they will sleep between 12-18 hours per day. That’s a lot of time spent on one surface, which makes your crib mattress choice really important.
Today I’m sharing our Newton crib mattress review. I came across Newton Baby online doing research on a crib mattress for our daughter. Their claims on safety and breathability immediately stood out to me, and I reached out to them with hopes we could try one out. We were given this breathable crib mattress complimentary in exchange for our honest opinion, and below I’m going to tell you why I truly have nothing but positive things to say about it.

About the Newton Breathable Mattress
Being safe means always putting your little one to sleep on their backs, yet rollovers will happen. Independent tests showed that a baby gets 97% more air while breathing through a
Newton Crib Mattress than traditional crib mattresses.
This reduces the risk of suffocation! I take peace of mind knowing that my daughter can still breathe even if she ends up rolling onto her stomach face down.
How is this possible?
The breathable cover is made of two layers of Breathe-Thru spacer fabric that are quilted together in an attractive cloud pattern, to create soft pillows of air.
It’s a 2-stage cover for ultimate longevity: the infant side of the cover uses two layers of highly breathable spacer fabric, and the toddler side maintains this breathability while adding a waterproof barrier for the, ahem, messier years.
She will sleep directly on the Newton mattress cover – no crib sheet needed! It is recommended that if you do choose to put on a crib sheet, use a cotton muslin one that’s breathable like this one from Aden and Anais.
The Wovenaire core is made of 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer which provides the comfort of foam and latex mattresses without any of the drawbacks. It’s also Greenguard Gold certified so there’s no off-gassing, toxic chemicals or allergens. Here’s what the inner core looks like – I could stick my fingers right through which was pretty cool.
Breathable products allow for better temperature regulation and a more comfortable sleep environment. That translate to better sleep for baby – no sweaty backs here!

Is the Newton Crib Mattress Worth It?
As soon as it arrived I could tell the Newton crib mattress was made with high-quality materials… it will definitely last through multiple children. The mattress cover is removable and washable, which is great for accidents, as is the mattress itself.
You can literally wash the entire mattress core in the shower or bathtub then let it air dry! The whole mattress only weighs 11 lbs so it’s easy to lift up and out of the crib.
On the home page of their website, they claim the mattress is safer, breathable, and washable, which I found to be true. I’ve thrown the waterproof cover in the washing machine many times and it came out perfectly clean again.
Do I Need a Newton Crib Sheet?
You’ll gain the maximum breathability benefits of Newton’s Wovenaire® cover by forgoing the crib sheet those first few months, but once baby can move around on their own you won’t be as concerned about breathability.
By then you’ll probably want to dress up the mattress with a cute crib sheet. All of the Newton crib sheets are designed to pair perfectly with Newton crib mattresses and are 100% breathable, supremely soft organic cotton muslin sheets.
Always test out your crib sheets to ensure they are the right fit… snug, not loose!
The Newton Mattress: Perfect for Baby Registries
A crib mattress is perfect for registries… it’s probably THE most used item in your baby’s first years. It’s also one of your big ticket items along with the car seat, stroller, and pack + play. Babylist.com is a great online registry where you can add things from all different stores, but give your friends and family one central registry list.
In addition to their website, the Newton Baby crib mattress is sold on Amazon with Prime… see its amazing reviews HERE. I chose the all-white mattress cover that’s gender-neutral and fits right in with my nursery decor. It’s also available in grey, pink and blue colors.
Whether you need a standard size or mini crib mattress, they’ve got you covered.
